FROM THE ORGANISERS

“Mass timber has a crucial role to play in transitioning our construction industry to a low carbon model. Already, across a wide range of asset classes, it is starting to prove to be a vastly more sustainable and also commercially viable alternative to conventional construction.

We want to take our attendees through the projects at the forefront of this change, let them “meet the makers” and get them inspired to adopt mass timber”.

Robbie Svars (Vistek/V-SET – Event Organiser)

INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS

Dan Whalen (USA): Harbor Bay Ventures (Vice President of Design & Development)

Dan leads all aspects of Development for Harbor Bay, including acquisitions, leasing and design. His latest project Intro, Cleveland (47,000 sqm luxury residential development) is the largest mass timber structure in the USA.

Dan will share insights from delivering this landmark project and address the crucial commercial drivers and outcomes that made this project such a significant success.

Robert Jackson (Canada): Fast + Epp (Partner)

Fast + Epp has been one of the key stakeholders behind mass timber’s exponential rise in North America.

Robert has been leading this charge, having contributed to the success of many innovative timber projects across North America including the TallWood House at Brock Commons, Limberlost Place, Keith Drive, Intro Cleveland and the PNE Amphitheatre.

Robert will share his experiences on some of these landmark projects providing insights on the challenges of adopting mass timber construction, and how these challenges can be overcome.

Evy Slabbinck (Switzerland):

Design to Production (Managing Director)

Design to Production is the digital engine room behind some of the most stunning architectural feats in timber construction over the past two decades. From Shigeru Ban’s La Seine Musicale to the Cambridge Mosque, D2P has helped change the understanding of what is possible in timber.

Evy will take attendees through the processes behind some of these amazing case studies and illustrate how the beauty of low-carbon mass timber construction can create highly engaging spaces that deliver on the brand promise of both commercial and public entities.

Noel Johnson (USA): Conrad Investment Management (Partner)

Noel is a real estate developer, consultant, educator and nonprofit leader. His experience spans $1B+ of development activity across 20+ private and civic projects. He is the most experienced mass timber developer in the United States, having led large, complex office and residential projects for more than a decade. On behalf of WoodWorks, Noel created and co-authored “The Business Case for Mass Timber”, a multi-year research project examining how mass timber impacts risk-adjusted investment returns. Noel is a regular speaker across urban economics, sustainability and mass timber topics; he teaches behavioral finance at Lewis & Clark College, Oregon.

Noel will discuss his research on how mass timber has driven project profitability across the United States, the behavioral finance that underpins such empirical findings and the reasons for optimism with respect to urban decarbonisation.

LOCAL SPEAKERS

James Dibble: Grange Development (Founder and Managing Director)

James Dibble’s Grange Development has a development pipeline worth more than $4 billion dollars but the project getting most attention is the Fraser and Partners designed C6 South Perth.

C6 is an ambitious project that harnesses mass timber to deliver a residential tower far lower in embodied carbon than conventional construction. It has now received planning approval and is set to become the world’s tallest hybrid timber building once construction is completed.

Jo Lees: Hines (Construction Manager)

Jo played a key role in delivering Hines first Australian T3 (Timber, Transit and Technology) project in Collingwood, Melbourne,

Designed by JCB Architects, and rising 15 levels (8 in timber – glulam post+beam/CLT floor plate), T3 Collingwood is now completed and fully operational.

It has a 6 Green Star rating and has 37% less carbon emissions than a comparative all concrete structure.

It also serves as a beacon as to how mass timber can provide a sustainable alternative in the commercial asset space, as well as a unique biophilic aesthetic in a post-Covid office leasing market.
